PIERRE MIREL JOINS THE CIG BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Council for Inclusive Governance is pleased to announce that Dr. Pierre Mirel, the European Commission’s Honorary Director General has accepted the invitation of CIG’s Board of Directors to join the Board as its newest member. Dr. Mirel had a distinguished career in enlarging the European Union. He has a doctorate degree in public law and served in the French foreign service in Cairo, Saigon and Paris until 1981 when he joined the European Commission in Brussels. At the commission Dr. Mirel spent a large part of his career on EU enlargement. His many achievements include setting up the PHARE assistance program; heading EU’s relations with Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania; and directing the accession negotiations with Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, and Turkey. In 2006, he took over EU’s relations with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, and Serbia, until his retirement in 2013. CIG had the pleasure to cooperate with Dr. Mirel in his capacity of the Commission’s Director for the Western Balkans. In 2013, Pierre Mirel was named an Honorary Director General of the European Commission. He lectures at Sciences Politiques in Paris and has published numerous papers, chapters, and articles as well as the book “L’Egypte des Ruptures.” We are delighted to have Pierre Mirel on board and look forward to his guidance as CIG continues its work on promoting inclusive governance and improving interstate and interethnic relations.
